When using a polarizing light microscope to identify minerals, how do you show that interference color (IC) is a function of material thickness? Turns out tape is a good anisotropic material Showing 1st to 4th order ICs! Image 1: PPL; Image 2: XPL

How many of you geologists remember having dreams (or nightmares) about when you first took the class? Everyday, my students tell me about their own dreams (or nightmares) now, and it reminds me of my own dreams of birefringence.

Working on ways to extract the shape of mineral grains from SEM images. Not exactly sure how to go one from here. Would be nice to get some grain metrics but the pixel threshold is giving me a headache. Holy grail would be surface area estimation.
