Did you know that JRR Tolkien voted to make sure that Dorothy Whitelock—one of the best medievalists of her generation—didn’t inherit his Oxford job and that the job went to a much-less-qualified man instead? (from Jana Schulman’s “An Anglo-Saxonist” p. 555)

For those not plugged into , a note that medieval studies is absolutely on 🔥right now in the midst of exposing 1) the whiteness of our discipline & 2) the white supremacist foundations of Early Medieval Studies. Real pressure to dismantle the term "Anglo-Saxon."

The International Society of Anglo-Saxonists needs to change its name to acknowledge that the term Anglo-Saxon is widely used in racist rhetoric. Be accountable and acknowledge that. Changing the name doesn't make you any less of a scholar.

You may not realize it, but there is some serious teamwork going on right now in my notifications. For every racist nonsensical tweet, there is an expert there to set the record straight. This is what we should be doing . . . and we are doing it.

Morning ISAS, Since I was asked about points I want addressed in an email from someone representing you I will list them here: 1) Write and include a policy on harassment. Be firm with it and quit protecting predators. You owe victims an apology. 1/10

Jesus, I’m away from twitter for a few days whilst knee-deep in book writing + what do I return to? Only the implosion of my bloody discipline . This has certainly been an eye opener but the criticisms levied against some integrious academics/friends is repugnant.

Some of you, especially board members have said I am a bully. Look at what this board member's husband has been busy doing. Attacking GRAD STUDENTS for speaking up. THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE!

Reading today is like a gift: I see scholars and academics who I have admired for years expressing support for those who uphold the status quo. Thank you, folk, for showing your true colours. It's good to finally know where you really stand.

It's the vigil of the Holy Cross! My fave True Cross reliquary is the c980s Limburg staurotheke. It has 10 enamel loculi for other Passion relics once kept in the Bucoleon, so it's our 1st material witness to the arrival of the Crown of Thorns in Constantinople 👑

it’s not uncommon for BIPOC to receive threats and other forms of harassment when presenting our anti-racist work at conferences. What are you willing to do to help keep us safe?

Hey Guy Halsall is attacking graduate students through a protected account using sexist slurs b/c he doesn't like the discussion of Anglo-Saxon as a white supremacist term. If you have access to his account please go collect your person. (1/2)

(2/2) & even if you aren't in his inner Twitter circle, share & call him out publicly for this. Advanced senior scholars punching down at ECRs, grad students has never been okay, it's been overlooked & ignored for too long, & we are NOT here for this anymore.

Every 3 years, from 1220, Dover donated an immense candle to Canterbury which stretched around a massive drum whose length was equal to the circumference of the town’s walls in the belief that it would ensure Becket’s protection. 1/3

If you are a major academic org/conference and you don't have a clear sexual harassment policy, you should not be allowed to run a conference. The end.
