i think the point is that we should focus on the best ideas and most important work. i’ve heard senior researchers recommend doing work that’s publishable but not really important, just to maintain publication output.

That may be true. However explaining, and justifying the results to non-specialists is crucial in many areas of research, especially medicine. Even if this narrative is only loosely based on the actual decision process, it can be valuable.
