Near , there is Kameoka, or ‘Turtle Hill’. Rice, shown here, belongs to Megumi Nonomura who runs a ‘Kyoto Homestay’, which serves traditional food with ingredients cultivated by Megumi, inc shitake mushrooms grown on logs in a bamboo copse by the house.

This Party’s Dead by Erica Buist Sep 12
Rokudochinno-ji Temple in - my late father-in-law was probably quite surprised when my ringing a bell and writing his name in Japanese on a card summoned him to Japan for a festival for the dead, but I’m sure he didn’t mind.

Planted late, and late to bloom, our sunflowers (向日葵 'Himawari') are bringing a much needed splash of colour to the gloomy day. "Turn your face to the sun, and shadows follow behind you." – an old Maori proverb.

In a small nod to the upcoming full moon, when Tsukimi (月見 'Moon Viewing') will be celebrated, a rabbit has joined us in the sofa room. We also received a delivery of gorgeous Higashi sweets (干菓子) from Kagawa (香川県) for Friday (September 13th).

Today I tried a number of Japanese cultural experiences. This is my attempt at Ikebana (the Japanese art of flower arranging, which translates as "making flowers alive".) Ikebana commenced as floral offerings at the Rokkakudo Temple in Kyoto about 1400 years ago

If you are looking for a hobby that helps you "be in the moment", I recommend origami. I was taught to make a leaping frog and a crane this morning (and here is the evidence).
