Dumb question, but I noticed two things on the temple that I didn't see explained. There is a rope that goes up one side of the temple. Is this for lighting purposes or is there another reason? I also wasn't sure what purpose the long stick on one side has.

The garden is centered with pond, and various trees are grown here. The reflection of Temple on the lake is amazingly beautiful and can be a everlasting memory once being viewed.

This temple was originally built in 1397 as a residence for shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu. The structure was completely covered in gold leaf, earning it the name Golden Pavilion.
