A paper by Anderson et al compared muscle activity between the conventional deadlift, trap bar deadlift, and hip thrust. The hip thrust elicited the highest glute activation, whereas the conventional deadlift elicited the highest biceps femoris activation.

The hip thrust is probably one of the best exercises to target the glutes. To get the most out of the exercise and minimize the risk of injury, utilizing good technique is essential.

A recent study by Barbalho et al compared hypertrophy of the quads and glutes between the back squat and hip thrust in 22 trained females. The back squat resulted in significantly more growth for the quads (12.9% vs 2.5%) and glutes (9.4% vs 3.6%).
