In West Yorkshire it was said that hazelnuts not yet ready for were guarded by an old pipe-smoking hag named 'Churn-Milk Peg'. Children were warned against gathering unripe nuts as she was sure to give them a sharp pinch or steal the thief away.

In NE Scotland the Clyack Sheaf, or last sheaf of the harvest, was cut by the youngest person present & saved till Christmas Day when it was fed to farm animals for good luck. Pictured crop is beside Castle Fraser stone circle.
