Diary of a Disabled Person. Sep 12
Some people can work. Some people cannot. Both are fine. But can we please stop throwing around accusations of either faking a disability or being lazy? I've been shamed for working & defending the rights of disabled people in the workplace. Not. Cool.

These issues lead many MANY folks, myself included, to feel pressured to something called “performative disability.” The idea here is that we‘re made to “perform” disability in a way that fits the expectations of our “audience” in order to get the accommodations we need

Some people - and I will confess I have done before - feel they have no choice in those situations but to perform disability in a more targeted way, specifically by adopting a trait that’s more acceptable to the person they need to accommodate them.

The airport can be one of the WORST places in terms of judgements and suspicion from onlookers when you use accessibility services. I don’t fit how many folks expect a body to look, which often leads to the assumption I’m taking advantage of the system.

This would actually potentially be extremely helpful for people. Ps, As Seen On TV products like this are often accessibility tools marketed this way to lower cost. Which is a good thing. Did that restore your faith in humanity? Did you at least learn something new?

Tweets like this only INCREASE the pressure towards performative disability, by reminding us once again that our is always being judged & scrutinized by onlookers, and that we need to fit a certain stereotype in order to be seen as enough to accommodate.

Is it ever OK to ask someone: How are you disabled? Because it’s not always apparent to the naked eye

Really fucking tired of people being held to the same standards of activism as abled people while abled people don't hold their protests, events, forums, etc to an accessible, inclusive standard.

In my case (and this isn’t uncommon in the community either,) it really doesn’t help that my level of ability varies widely - not just on a day to day basis, but within the course of a day as well. I’m accused of faking my identity for attention A LOT.

If y’all want to make a deaf guy’s day, read and share my story that just got published. More importantly, though, support and content creators. Buy and share our work. Amplify our voices and experiences. The more we’re seen, the less this shit happens.

Look I am going to say it. There are some folks on here only out for themselves. It's a hard thing to say but I have been on the receiving end of their hate. They use their disability to garner things, then shit over people. These people are not helping our community

As a man with very little, I completely agree. I have consistently had more genuine selfless help from the lowest of us than from the well to do. and knows no price. You're not wrong
