That’s right, asteroids can have moons. In 1993 the Galileo spacecraft was the first to identify a moon orbiting an asteroid. Since then, over 200 asteroid-moon systems have been discovered. Also, some asteroids have been found to have more than one body orbiting them.

From the orbit of 2009 FD propagated until year 2300, we have computed the MOID and the distance at the descending node (in au). A MOID smaller than the radius of the impact cross-section occurs between 2166 and 2197.

Time for another in our series. that Hayabusa mission was the first sample-return mission from a near-Earth object? Hayabusa landed on asteroid Itokawa in 2005 and collected samples for research purposes. On June 30 we celebrate !
