I've been repeatedly told how hard it is to do a PhD & the problems I may face. To be prepared for loneliness, adversity and inevitable self-doubt. Does anyone have anything uplifting or positive to say about the experience?

I was at a conf last wk & skipped the plenaries. Why? The same people have been plenary speakers at every conf I've attended this yr. I understand that not everyone attends multiple conf, but there are definitely more than 5 people doing "plenary-worthy" work.

My daughter asked me to sign her English syllabus so I signed it, called it a sexy, sexy syllabus, told her I was stealing her whole "I believe in rigor and vigor," gave her a few book recommendations, and asked her to be my Pen Pal. My daughter is mortified. πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

While I'm busy making enemies on , let me add: if your syllabus requires students to show you a doctor's note for an excused absence, that's unethical af and you are wrong.

From a faculty position ad: "Letters of reference will only be solicited for candidates placed on the long short list." The "long short" list? How many lists are there???

There's an Easter egg in both of my syllabi. Students have to email me a gif or meme. Looking forward to seeing who actually read the syllabus carefully...Who else has done this?

PSA as job market season intensifies: women apply for way less jobs than men, and often think they have to meet 100% of the listed qualifications to apply (not true). So, to all the women candidates: apply! Even if you think it's a reach...apply!
