How to pick a project worth pursuing: 1. Interest: do you think about it in your free time and bring it up in random conversations? 2. Importance: if we understood it, would the world be a better place? 3. Contribution: do you have something novel to add?

People often ask, “Mbali, you’re a CA, why academia?” My response: CA students need to be taught by other CA’s. CA’s need to produce knowledge which enhances our accounting profession (research). So yes, I’m an academic and I love it 🥰🥰.

Hot take: Academia is founded on respectability politics (& racism🙃), forcing the marginalized to constantly code-switch to fit in. Over it. We NEED authenticity in academia. DEI means nothing if we have to shrink ourselves to enter the room.

I see a lot of posts about how doing a PhD inevitably results in mood disorders, depression, needing counselling, etc. Is there ANYONE out there who completed a doctorate with mental health (relatively) intact? Or is that a pipe dream?

Have seen someone asking if 26 years old is too old to do a PhD. I’m 25 and in my field & country, I’m the youngest, whereas all my colleagues are 30+. I guess a lot depends on the topic & country you are in?

In any field, but esp. academia, it is easy to feel inadequate as others announce new books, articles, awards & speaking gigs. Always run your own race & compare yourself to no one. Stay focused on the projects that interest you & do your best work! You got this

I’ve had 99 twitter followers for the past three months, patiently waiting for just one more follower, today I am down to 98 followers. I’m devastated to say the least

- "PhD student" can have a negative association, and not accurate across PhD programs - "PhD candidate" is confusing since programs use it differently - "PhD researcher" could include PhD holders 👉Suggested new terminology: doctor + mentee = doctee

"In other words, each year, women scientists have a 19.5% higher risk to leave academia than male scientists, giving male authors a major cumulative advantage over time." This is a must read.
