Even though it stopped us reaching & , I miss the sea ice already! Every day was spectacular and the "brown" ice (full of microscopic plants and animals) is an important food source for the whole ecosystem!

Iceberg A68 has nearly closed off the area in front of Larsen C Ice Shelf where SPRI researchers on the Weddell Sea Expedition were working recently. Since 14 Jan, A68’s northern end moved ~82 km WNW: it now lies within only ~8.5 km of the ice shelf.

Whilst most of us have been cursing the sea ice for stopping us reaching & , & the sea ice scientists have been out most days working on the sea ice and collecting samples. The intrepid team uses helicopters to land on the floating ice!

If you want to understand just how difficult the sea-ice conditions are for the RV look at these maps. The ship's trying to reach the calving point of the monster iceberg, which is south of the Bawden Ice Rise. Ship tracks are for the past week 😬
