Permian microorganisms in acid fluid inclusion in halite from Kansas. Scale bar is 5 microns, so all are 4 microns and smaller. These yellow beasties fluoresce green, which is characteristic of bacteria and archaea.

This , here's something HOT! Komatiites are rare ultramafic volcanic rocks that formed from HIGH T (>1300 C) lava flows early in the Earth's history when its interior had more heat. They're easily ID'd by the spinifex texture of the olivine. 4x mag, XPL & PPL.

"Lunar Sample 10003" is a rock brought back from Mare Tranquillitatis on the Moon on 20th July 1969 by the Apollo 11 astronauts. It is a basalt that crystallised from an ocean of liquid rock. Image from ().

Biotite is one of the most common rock-forming minerals. For , here is a wonderfully pleochroic xenocryst found in a mafic enclave. Tell-tale ‘bird’s-mottling’ is also present under crossed polars - what a gorgeous mica flake! fov = 2.5mm, PPL & XPL.

So at NHM we generally take SLR shots of the whole polished thin section in visible light and UV. The results are sometimes pretty . Sample TAB20 from the Sao Pedro Das Aguias Skarn, Tabuaço, Portugal

a cheery little monazite crystal, surrounded by dark halo of radiation damage to the enclosing biotite. The black flake is prob. graphite. FOV 0.5mm wide. Uusikaupunki, Finland, in the collections.

These crystalline beads are called chondrules — frozen droplets of once-molten rock that were free-floating in the solar nebula. They coalesced, alongside other dust, to form planets. They are found in meteorites, and are the focus of my research.

In medieval Russia, was used as an alternative to window glass. In addition to its being the most common mica, it is colorless and easy to see through - ideal for windows. But, I think it's prettiest under crossed polars! fov = 2.5mm, PPL & XPL.
