A1 Authentic leaders know their staff..really know them...beyond how they work in class..they know little details which means they know what makes their staff tick

A2 Don't lose contact with the staff or the staffroom..you're not their 'mate' but equally you aren't the 'opposition'...they are your colleagues not 'my staff'...subtle nuance shows you value teamwork

Build a strong team around them who share and believe in the vision, work together to create a culture that embraces these and make sure all decisions are made with the 'why' at the heart of them.

Make sure you always look at the ‘big picture’ of the school and ensure you spend lots of time in classrooms and the playground rather than your office, consider pupil and staff voice frequently.

Being open about being ‘genuine’, ‘sincere’ & ‘authentic’’. I say to my team that I want the best for us. That the things we do are to help & not hinder progress - but we are human & will mistakes along the way - so let me know when I make them!

A2. Sounds ridiculous but having it somewhere you can always see it; I have it on my notebook, my whiteboard and planner. Just so when difficult decisions are to be made, I know why its happening

A1: Authentic leadership is underpinned by trust of staff & stakeholders- what makes it ‘authentic’ is a willingness to be open, considerate of prevailing opinions, & to walk the talk. It’s about creating a culture that allows others to develop and thrive

keep people & values at the centre of all decisions. Do the right things even when nobody is watching. Be yourself 100% at all times even when you don’t feel you are enough, you are.

keeping the reason you came into education as the main thing helps leaders remain connected to their core purpose. School vision and values flex over time and from school to school but every leader has their fundamental purpose in their hearts and minds wherever they are

The most authentic leaders I’ve worked for have made me want to go to work every day- even when it’s been hideously hard the day before. I’ve felt appreciated, believed in, inspired and challenged.

A1. Authentic Leadership is all about ensuring that decisions made have their primary focus on the pupil's learning; harder to do for some in difficult situations

A2. You must take time to reflect. Being mentored or coached is essential to keep you grounded. Having relationships you trust in your setting to keep you grounded and call out blind spots is ace, but not always possible.

I suggest that all leaders should avoid being superheroes (if anything they should be hero makers) ...instead, leaders should be supermodels of the behaviour they want to see

Authentic leadership is “what you see is what you get.” The potential positive impact is dealing with THE issue, rather than something else.

A2: staying strong to your moral compass and vision at all times. I always find being in the company of our students really brings this home each and every day and pushes you to continue driving forward.
