As a student who does massive amounts of cell work & molecular bio I'm horrified by the amount of waste generated in labs. Is it hubris to believe my project is more important than the environmental impact I'm having? Do other researchers ever feel this?

Just finished my PhD pre-completion seminar. After 7 years, 10+ operations (I lost count), 6+ months in hospital and at least 3 life threatening crises + completing my specialist fellowship, working 2 jobs and parenting as best I can- the finish line is in site

One day you’ll thank yourself for never giving up. Yes, you will get tired; you will have eye bags.....when that happens, take a break. Then resume again. Keep chasing your dreams, they’re yours alone. Winners never quit. Happy Friday 🌸

Advice to fellow grad students: if you are sick, take a sick day. If you don't, your productivity will be bad anyways and then you'll get your ENTIRE office sick in the process. #7

I've witnessed a beautiful moment. A senior academic asked my neighbor if she's presenting. A grad student, she glanced down and said, no, I just have a poster. He leaned forward, warmly, sharing how critical posters have been to his work. Not "just", he says.

Something no one ever told me: getting a PhD changes you. And I'm not talking about critical thinking or reading or something obvious and expected like that. I mean the whole person.

Don’t be ashamed to admit what you don’t know, especially if you’re in science. Your job is based on the fact that there’s shit you don’t know.

Wishing all the dissertation writers out there patience, persistence, and just the right amount of intellectual curiosity to keep you going!! The transformation from student to scholar is uniquely arduous and inspiring. Shine on.
