The more high frequency content a sound has, the closer it seems. Play around with boosting or cutting the highs to move a sound forward or backward in a mix.

Limitations can be great creative catalysts. As an experiment, try a mix where you only use 1 EQ, 1 compressor, 1 reverb, etc. This will force you to really get to know them in depth.

Boominess: Excessive low frequency energy that causes exaggerated sustain effects on your speakers. How to fix it: Deal with boomy bass by using a high-pass filter on sources with a lot of low end. Learn more:

focus less on EQing low end frequencies. Do more automation, saturation, and parallel effects. SubGroups are a big help!!!
