Migration minister Notis Mitarachi announced a 1-week deadline to local authorities on the islands to propose other sites for setting up new closed migrant camps. On the island of , locals painted a massive Greek flag and wrote “ΟΧΙ” (NO) on the requisitioned land.

Local residents on this morning used trucks to block the road leading to the site where the Greek authorities are planning to build a closed camp for asylum seekers. “We will not allow it & will take actions if they proceed”, they said. “Today is just a small sample.”

Two years ago today I was on on 18 February again and took this picture. I wrote back then that hundreds of refugees & migrants live at a makeshift camp outside . Now it is estimated that a total of 20.000 people live in and, mainly, outside Moria.

Migration minister Mitarachi said this morning that 745 failed asylum seekers in pending deportation to Turkey “have gone missing” on the island of . That‘s the problem with not imposing detention measures, he added and said that next week deportations will resume.
