Jakelin was just a young child fleeing unimaginable violence in her home country and looking for safety and security in the US. Her death was a tragedy, a stain on our values, and illustrates the cruelty of the Trump Administration’s immigration policies.

Another child, 8-year-old Felix Alonzo-Gomez, has died in the custody of border patrol agents. Mr. President, how many lives must be lost before we acknowledge the magnitude of this humanitarian crisis? A wall won't fix this human tragedy.

“There will be an investigation into Jakelin’s death, but in broad terms its causes are clear enough: heedlessness, a lack of compassion, poor accountability at the border.” A sobering reminder of the culture of cruelty .

Tragedies like this are incompatible with our American values but have become all too common during this administration. We must honor Jakelin’s memory by fighting to reform our immigration system to make sure it is rooted in respect for human dignity.
