1870 Erskine Childers was born in London. A soldier in the Boer war & WW1, wrote 'The Riddle of the Sands' but is probably best known for smuggling guns for the Irish Volunteers in the Howth gun running in 1914. He was executed during the Civil War.

1876 Myles Keogh from Leighlinbridge, Carlow died at the Battle of Little Bighorn in Montana. This was General Custer's doomed Last Stand against Sioux&Cheyenne warriors. Keogh was the most senior Captain present. Over 30 other Irishmen died there too
