The level of incompetence at HS2 is staggering, even judged by the low standards typical of big government projects. Now it seems they failed to check ground conditions properly when estimating the cost of the project:

It's actually perfectly rational for the public to be sceptical about big government projects. They very often go horribly wrong, with costs much higher than expected and benefits much lower. Cameron and Osborne's vanity project is a classic example.

What a fiasco is: MPs (with some like honourable exceptions), consultants and civil servants have displayed staggering levels of complacency, incompetence, poor planning, lack of oversight, excessive secrecy and waste of public funds.
