Thankyou ⁦⁩ for having me on the programme on a very busy news day to discuss the research showing children on free school meals are TWICE as likely to have no library in their school - libraries are statutory in prisons but not in schools

"One of the curiosities of life is that schools are not obliged to have libraries, but prisons are. We urgently need libraries & librarians in all schools, for all our children." I totally agree with : all kids need !

Today, 3 lovely Y11 students left the school (& Library) I’m so fortunate to work in. I had hand-made cards & look, look what they wrote! This is what do. This is why we ALL need people, because these young people are, & are going to be, amazing.

School Libraries are not just about books. They really aren't. Even if they have new exciting books (and many could do with weeding and bolstering) they are utterly no fun at all without a dedicated member of staff who can be a compass through the maze.

I know public libraries have it tough but school libraries have it tougher. So I absolutely doff my cap to all the hard working & wonderful school librarians out there for the fantastic work they do

‘I am the Children's Laureate Wales and I believe every child deserves a Great School Library’ No question. EVERY CHILD. We shouldn't have to campaign for this. It's fundamental to the well-being, growth & literacy of our young people. EW

Learned this week that just 12.6% people in publishing (inc authors/writers) have working class origins by parental NS-SEC. This will not improve w/out My single parent earned £15-17k/yr Access to 1000s of books was VITAL part of my path into science writing

And school librarians should also be teaching students about the impact that fake news has on society not just how to spot it. Taking personal responsibility for what we create helps grow a global citizen

This is just the best news. Top of her list? School libraries - run by school librarians - should be statutory. Can I get an “Amen”?

UPDATE...I've now created a science reading list which references actual topics covered on the Year 7+8 curriculum within some cool, modern kids fiction. You like? 😆

Student asked me when I'm next putting through a book order. I said probs January. He took a moment then said he'd wait as it's too expensive for his parents to keep on buying the new books in the series. THIS is why we need . Access to reading for ALL 👏

A school library & a qualified Librarian provides its pupils with a place of sanctuary, inspiration & wellbeing. It provides staff a hub that can improve pupil engagement in all subjects. It provides to the school an amazing resource that can improve results

Two things school librarians always say to me: 1) I'd like to apologise for the state of my car 2) The library gets so busy during lunchtime The first is never true, the second so telling - Every child deserves that space to be, study and read.

Speechless! Just found out our library budget is being increased by £300 this year! It follows investment in AR two years ago and DEAR time this year. I hope having me as a qualified staff member has made a difference too 😉

Thrilled to see the school library get recognition in our Ofsted report. A real love of reading was also seen across the school.
