Common signs of disease include pop-eye & sunken eye, dropsy (swelling & raised scales due to fluid in the body cavity), ulcers, fungus, bleeding & excess mucus. Basically anything that doesn’t look ‘normal’ could be a sign of disease

Gills are a useful indicator of health & many behavioural changes seen are due to damage caused by disease. Missing tissue, unusual colour, fungal infection, bleeding & excess mucus are all common signs. Always check the gills if you suspect disease

Sometimes signs are subtle & may not be so easy to see without a closer look. The overall condition of a fish, such as its weight, general colour & fin condition can say a lot about its health and may indicate the early stage of a problem

At the we would teach preschoolers to do Swedish fish per pound. Basically they moved through standard hatchery ops using Swedish fish.
