I used to feel bad it took me 6.5 years to defend my PhD. Now I feel differently bc I was: , primary caregiver to my kid, responsible for most household duties, dealt w/ my mom's death, went through a divorce, & struggled w/ . Who cares how long it takes?

I woke up today thinking about cultural capital in elite educational settings. I'm always inspired by 's work, but today I was thinking about grad school/law school context. If you're 1st-gen, chances of branding as dumb, lazy, or "gunner" are high. 1/11

I’m so proud of myself man, I really pursued higher education w no type of guidance. I navigated the system by myself and literally learned as I went. I had no one to give me advice or hold my hand through this journey. I will graduate with a 3.5 GPA, I AM that bitch

Today is ! MAJOR shout out to those students or grads that listened when mama said "get your education, because it's something nobody can take away from you." I salute you on this accomplishment! a word from a fellow college grad, now med student:

Every year I attend a faculty-student luncheon for students on campus where they ask us to share an obstacle and despite wishing not to, every year I get a lump in my throat when talking. I hate it. But when folks thank me for my vulnerability Im reassured its alright.

Nursing school is tough, I can admit that. Everyone goes through their own struggle, but you can’t tell me you don’t have an advantage when your mom is already a nurse and my mom barely finished middle school bc her family couldn’t afford to send her off to high school.

Just submitted paperwork declaring my complete MA and PhD committee, AND applied for MA graduation in the spring! Every β€œlittle” step is an achievement in academia and I’m only 5 months away from being the first Rivera to get a grad degree. S O C I A L C A P I T A L

A lot of folks who come from more privileged backgrounds forget that those of us who didn’t win the childhood lottery are mostly doing this whole PhD thing for our families

Who are first-gen students? β€œFirst-gen typically means that your parents did not complete a 4-year college or university degree making you the first one to attend college in your immediate family.”

Alas, there was an embarrassing typo in the first Tweet of the first version of this thread. Like many types concerned about perceptions of belongingness, I couldn't leave the Tweet up looking like that πŸ’πŸΏβ€β™€οΈ

This past decade was the worst & best decade of my life. I lost my father and my son. I witnessed my mother battle alcoholism. I experienced homelessness. But she persisted... graduated w/ honors . Became a Truman scholar and now I’m pursuing a grad degree 〽️
