Linen. For centuries linen was made from flax (a plant) that is left in fields where ‘wild’ microbes break down the pectin, releasing the fibers. Some linen, like this by is still made this way. Microbes help us in so many unappreciated ways!

A tūī doing its job, see the bright yellow Phormium pollen on its head. This bird had just chased off the other tui - even though there’s 20 plants in flower, they are very territorial.
