Very pleasing to see attempts by a handful of MPs (men, since you ask) to frustrate proposals to tackle bullying & sexual harassment in parliament have just failed. Institutional failure to guarantee staff in this place a safe work place is completely unacceptable

And, at the risk of sounding worthy, very proud that my novel about abuse at the heart of the House of Commons is resonating in a week when a spotlight's being shone at this issue.

While MPs & journalists remain focused on the on makes for depressing reading. What parliamentary employees - particularly women - have to endure in a supposedly 21st century workplace is shocking.

📺 WATCH: The into bullying and harassment in Westminster underlines the need for all political parties to have completely independent complaints processes. Parliament must set a strong example that this kind of behaviour has no place in our politics or our society.

There is never a perfect time for “change”. When a dysfunctional culture needs overhaul or removal that has to happen when it’s seen. Putting things off for any reason is why the culture stays in place & nothing changes.

There is a time when the easy virtue signalling support for equality, treating people & “workers” with respect and not tolerating bullying or worse gets exposed as not a priority. Politicians are diminished yet again. Which is dangerous.

Lots of good speeches in the debate last night, but I was particularly interested that some MPs explicitly linked the culture inside Palace of Westminster with the building itself - an issue which needs to be considered in the rebuilding of Parliament

1. The is sadly familiar. Having conducted the independent inquiry into the Lib Dem policies and culture more than five years ago - it is depressing but unsurprising that little has changed. (Thread)

Difficult to see how Parliament can reform itself when there's a culture of MPs being above the law being allowed to adjudicate upon themselves, when it leads to corruption with the executive inside the legislature & the whipping system based upon bullying too.

Until the establishment stops protecting the establishment, it’s not going to get better. Hundreds of MPs can claim they want change but hundreds of MPs are lying. Proud to see some standing up for something better but so angry to see such hypocrisy today.

Jess Phillips: 12 people are walking around, and we all know exactly who they are. Andrea Leadsom: If she knows 12 people walking around who are abusing people, then she should report it.
