Q3: How long do you think is an appropriate period of time for YOU as an individual to step away from your code before it might have negative effects?

So, we write code. But sometimes, we don't want to write code. It could be for a short while, it could be for a long while. But we ALL do it, and it's actually sometimes really important to step away and recalibrate!

About 5 mins before the chat ends at 8 PM EST, we’re going to do shoutouts. This is where you can link any accomplishments, projects, cool resources you've found, tag helpful people, whatever you like! :)

How does this chat work? I'll post a series of 3 questions over the course of the hour. We discuss each, then we move onto a related question on the topic.

A1: Unknown the length of time but it was when I was working full-time 12 hours shift that left me drained mentally, physically and emotionally.. and it was more the people than the job. Then having to complete life duties after. Stress was making me ill.

A2: Only when I know I need to force a break because I have a busy schedule or other tasks that will come up soon. It’s a self-care move or when I’m simply tapped out.

A3: The max I can allow right now is 2 days at the most but that doesn’t usually happen either because some of the work I do now involves coding.

As a I feel like I've got to work twice as hard so that's why I don't take too long breaks. That and the non-technical people in my life are pressuring me to quit coding so I take less breaks bc I'm determined to prove them wrong

Q2: Do you ever actively avoid coding? Like, you think about it, and go "nah"? When and why?

Some quick, simple ground rules: 1. Be supportive 2. Be honest 3. Be kind Any doubt on what those mean, just ask.

I dunno, sometimes it works the other way. Banging the keyboard yields no progress and only stepping away and coming back with a fresh look works. I guess there's a time for both, but right now the pendulum is swinging towards "stick it out" for me...

All questions will be labeled (ex: Q1) so please include the label in your answer (ex: A1) and the hashtag. Feel free to respond directly to each other, too! :)

Today, we're going to talk about some of the reasons why we take a break from codingβ€”or even avoid codingβ€”and what we do to get back on the horse! OK, let's go!

Q1: Since you started coding, what's the longest period of time you've spent away from it? Why did you take a break?

I don't know if today is the right day for this topic. I was fighting with a component the whole of last week and was thinking of taking a break from it this week, but my pair convinced me to stick and today we got it working... πŸ˜‚

A3: Personally, after a week or so I come back and feel completely lost. But it comes right back, only takes a few hours. The important thing is to take care of yourself. Take as long as you need. The coding skills will come back, your health might not!

A1: it can take literally nothing to make me not want to code haha. I get frustrated easily, but I try to work through the feels. it's usually when I'm already tired or grumpy, so I have to ask myself how I'm feeling before I give in
