Gale-force northwesterly winds blowing down the Irish Hills are producing plenty of compressional heating. The PG&E EEC in Avila Valley hit 97°, while Port San Luis was at 86° at 1 p.m. Just a few miles away, Diablo Canyon reported a temperature of only 61°.

visible satellite imagery early this evening shows low clouds returning to the coast after sunny conditions for much of the day. Note the wave clouds off the coast - a byproduct of northwest flow interacting with the coastal terrain.

How have July 16th temperatures panned out this decade? From 2011-2013, conditions were around 10 to 15 degrees below normal given anomalous troughs over the West. Meanwhile, 2017 featured a strong ridge which kept highs in the mid/upper 100s.
