NJ Transit, Amtrak and PATH commuters often face nightmarish commutes b/c “the 109-year-old bridge is prone to getting stuck in the open position, and when that happens crews have to be summoned to bang on it with sledgehammers.”

"Signal problems" are sometimes caused by stray current in the century-old North River Tunnel. Poorly draining ballast (stone under rails) allows water to back up. Wet stone conducts electricity, confuses signal system + delays your trip. for ⬆️reliability!

East Orange, NJ is an excellent place to build transit-oriented housing. However, only 2 trains per day on the Gladstone Branch, which serves East Orange, run to NY Penn Station. New York's disinvested transit system is a major impediment to regional growth.

If one of the North River Tunnel’s tubes needs to be shut down, close to 500,000 NJ TRANSIT train, bus, PATH, ferry, and automobile commuters would face even longer and more congested commutes to/from NYC. and prevent this from happening.

Elaine Chao suggests repairing Hudson River rail tunnels while they are still in operation. Whether this is feasible or not, it doesn't solve the problems that Gateway is intended to fix.

NRDC is suing the Trump Administration for deliberately delaying the proposed Gateway Tunnel project by hiding information about it. Glad they're demanding answers. The current tunnel under the Hudson River is deteriorating - we need to soon!
