Today, it became necessary to begin using the Greek alphabet to name storms for the first and only time since the 2005 season. With now active and (presumably) soon on the way, 43% of the season by climatology still remains.

BREAKING: With already in the eastern Atlantic, tropical depression twenty-two will be now named Tropical Storm once upgraded. This is only the 2nd time in history where we have entered the greek alphabet for tropical cyclones (the last time was 2005)!

Recent ASCAT data revealed winds of 35-40 knots with and it will likely become later today or tonight. If upgraded, this would be the third storm **today** and the second Greek storm of the season!

I already had to update this graphic today to add to the list. Sub- storm formed off the coast of Portugal in the North Atlantic. Tropical Storm Beta is expected to develop in the Gulf of Mexico later today or Saturday.

A brand new ASCAT of has found winds of 40-45kt within the deep convection north of the center. Assuming we're done with surprise tropical storms for the day, this system should be upgraded to Tropical Storm later this afternoon.
