I took this photo of Soviet soldiers having a souvenir photo taken at the Brandenburg Gate, with the Berlin Wall in the background, in March 1968.

To anyone interested in how Berlin looked with the wall before 1989 and how it looks tidy I recommend the link below. It’s still stunning in so many ways!

Ich war dabei! I was there.😀 In Berlin, at the Brandenburg Gate, to see the wall being swarmed by very happy people.

32 years ago I was an exchange student who lived for a year in West Germany. I never imagined a reunified Germany but two years after my life-changing experience it happened. It brought hope for the future. Thanks Fernholz family and YFU!

In 1988 my history teacher told us that German unification would not happen within our life time, but it did 1 year later! It taught me to believe that even the most amazing things can happen sooner than you think!

Thirty years ago today the Berlin Wall fell. I was in year 8 studying German, learning about the two Germanies… with a few years everything had changed. That day shaped my interest in the countries of Eastern Europe and led to me studying Russian at university.

The fall of the Berlin Wall teaches us that people tend to want, thrive in, and enjoy inclusive (not extractive) institutions. May Germany serve as an example.
