Our samples went off to this week, and I've been itching ever since! Did you sign up for Amy's research?

Who else is maximising on the flow? Himalayan Balsam is out at the moment. We have small pollen dishes in too, just to let them rest and start to build strength and reserves. 🐝🍯

When I did our inspection today, the bees were uncharacteristically grumpy and saw no evidence of the queen - no eggs, no larvae, very few capped brood cells. Is this normal as we're now entering winter or might our queen have carelessly died?

Does anyone make mead?! I like the idea and would like to do more with the honey residue in buckets and on capping, but I'm not sure my usual bucket chemistry approach would produce anything worth drinking!

This may be an unpopular opinion; I don’t believe the Queen β€˜rules’ the hive, the workers do. She is basically their battery hen πŸ€”

Everyone else when you're an experienced software engineer: why are you doing that, you utter utter loser? Everyone else when you're an inexperienced beekeeper: do you mind if I suggest something to you as I think you might be able to improve things slightly?

Defending the citadel! The final role of a house bee before graduating as a flying/foraging bee, is guard duty. This bee is valiantly defending her colony against hungry wasps. Read more at:

Have you had more success this year, than you did last year? 🍯🐝🍯 How do you measure your success, and have you compared the previous year's diary/notes as you go through each week of this year? What changes have you seen?

It's not just turkeys that fatten up for πŸ¦ƒπŸ¦ƒ Has anybody moved their bees out on to late summer crops, for one last push before the winter? 🍯 Have you started supplementing their feed with syrup or pollen, to build up winter stores? 🍯

We might be starting the top bar hive build tomorrow and I am still undecided on the entrance! πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ Do use a slot entrance or go for holes? I have been driving myself mad with the decision.

Colonies are starting their autumn/winter preparations, queen raising is off the agenda and the drones (male bees) are being expelled. Read more at:

Do you leave the board in? I only ever put my under when checking for mite drop. I'll let you know if I see the queen tomorrow. 2 brood boxes, so I'll suit up for that. Too late today. We'll be praying! πŸ™‡β€β™‚οΈπŸ€žπŸ™‡β€β™€οΈ

Shit. We've definitely had wasps in there (you may remember my photo of the foam insulation from Thursday night's ) but I never thought to look on the mesh floor

We know have their place in the food chain, but when that food is inside our hives, they have no place! Are you still bothered by wasps?
