265 Someone hand me a martini I'll hold it for a friend And if I take a sip or two Don't begrudge me My folly I'll let the fireplace Be my lamp As I read And reminisce I've many reasons To be nostalgic For you are poetry To me That beats a song In my heart

By nostalgia’s warm lamplight I see us all then— Martinis in dark bars Laughter in leather booths Talking close Of books read and gossip gleaned Toasting our cleverness Celebrating for no reason Reveling in the poetry Of gin and youth and friendship 265

We were so clever at dodging trouble. We cheated the moon's romantic influence by meeting at noon instead of midnight. We'd play an intimate chess match, arousing our intellects; to win or lose was to do neither, it only enhanced our alternating roles of cat and mouse.

At night, when the city walks I walk with her, we lift rocks That some call reality, peep below There are all manner of mysteries Hiding in the out of sight The city knows their names Calls them friend and enemy I am but a reflection, in their eyes.

Dark brown eyes of ebony Windows to an empty soul That hide forbidden imagery Of things that happened long ago Precocious colt in racing green A champion in all but name A foxhole in the dark unseen Now things will never be the same 266

Unleash the beast, Capture it's heart, Grow from it's fierceness Create your own art, Shame in the frame, To lose is the same, Damned if you do, Or don't play the game, Underbelly found, From here can be sin, Watch your world rage, But don't lose the fire within.

I found a crossroad lit by nostalgia's lamp and imagination's martini moon, a river of ink running pitch black in my mind's sky, so I wrote with reason in chanced beauty wrought in crystalline poetry, and let friends read away their losing troubles with me.

I awaken and stretch my muscles, The rain spattering against the window from a storm. My dreams leave me shaking, perplexed from heart broken agony. Where once you appeared every night, There is nothing but darkness, dreamlessness.

Drove off along the road that night That long road leading far from town When on my dash there came a light Then moments later broken down Noise behind a nearby hedge Riders gallop fallow field Years later from that peaty sedge My rotting murdered body yield 266

Sometimes, poets reveal What eyes can't see Worlds wher you & me Could fill the blank pages Of our tenament hearts With fountain pens We write ourselves free Into each others winds Sometimes the world Opens up her seas So I may cross but Would then you foster me

We'll have one more nostalgic evening Asking why a never-ending universe Seems to always to come to an end When you pick up that pen each day In a dark room under the lamp

Swimming in the nostalgia of these pixels, I reach my hand above but only to wave at old, forgotten friends.

On a dark midnight horse riders race through forbidden lands. Promise of riches and glory to the winner. The entry cost-one soul to be paid by each. There were no winners in Destiny’s game, only death and entertainment for the guests watching these unsuspecting men. 266
