Ernest Hemingway was a war correspondent in WWII, but his involvement with the military went much farther back. He was a Red Cross ambulance driver on the Italian Front in WWI. He was seriously wounded by mortar fire on July 8, 1918.

Allied POWs tried to escape the German camp of Stalag Luft III 76 years today. Three of them reached freedom, the other 73 were recaptured and 50 were murdered in retaliation. The events formed the basis for the film The Great Escape.

69-year-old John L. Burns fought with the Union army at the Battle of Gettysburg despite being a civilian. He was wounded and left behind, but manage to avoid execution by the Confederates for being a civilian combatant.
