American Three-toed Woodpecker: They can peck and chip away when they need to too but more often than not they use sideways blows to exfoliate the bark to find the grubs they are after. Nice having them easy to find around Anchorage this fall.

Common Loon: Starting to molt out of the spangled summer plumage, note the white feathers appearing at the base of the bill. I usully prefer birds to flap looking at me but in this case tha back is so nicely patterned and the belly was too bright in the sun. JBER

Dall Sheep lamb: I was looking for moose but lucked on a flock of sheep that descended from the steep slopes to forage on lichens and berries. Surprisingly unconcerned about me. Too sunny for sheep photography but hard to pass on an opportunity. Chugach State Park .
