News of the day: / is signed. On paper, a bunch of hot air. But based on these two's smug looks, one could think there is something more sinister to it!

The Treaty of Aachen gives new impetus to the Franco-German friendship. The fact that this friendship has become so natural is a true testament to what our two countries have achieved - for Germany and France, as well as for Europe.

The could be more far-reaching, more binding and rely on a less convoluted structure. Yet, how it ranges from local to global, from governments to administrations to citizen initiatives makes it a convincing successor of the Treaty.

Worried about the Aachen Treaty. Germany and France taking over as sole leaders of EU. France vows to lobby to get Germany a permanent seat at UN Security Council. Excuse me?
