This week, I’m traveling to Africa for the first time since I left office – a continent of wonderful diversity, thriving culture, and remarkable stories. As I prepare for this trip, I wanted to share a list of books that I’d recommend for summer reading:

Bad: Got off a train and a woman said “Good for you!” Like, why? For existing in a wheelchair? Good: 2 toddlers were fascinated by my chair on the ferry. Their mom didn’t pull them away or act weird, so I let them check it out. Then they both hugged me! Typical day on wheels.

My mother would often tell me that if you’re the first to do something, make sure you’re not the last. That’s why it’s so important to be a mentor and lift others up. Encourage a friend that’s active in their community to run for office. Change is possible.
