I had, but my next thought was "I don't understand why Shane Legg, who seems like a pretty smart guy, is so ludicrously optimistic that connectionism is going to suddenly start working when it never has before, and worth quitting a good academic career for." Not my best call.

In retrospect, what were the signs we could have noticed at the start of 2010 that DL was going to work out? What did Shane Legg see before other people?

Well, you *could* have predicted it if you had faith connectionism could work, didn't work for lack of compute, and the predicted compute would be available soon, and that's AFAICT how et al decided to do DM when they did. The third is easy & I agreed. The other two...
