Very Lovecraftian: an entire archaic universe, wiped out almost overnight by interlopers efficiently rewriting the fundamental laws of Earth chemistry. Reminds me of Baxter's Xeelee Sequence with repeated waves of substrate changes for life/civilization.

The Great Oxidation Event/Oxygen Catastrophe comes to mind as well. And would it be making too fine a point to consider humanity's extraction & exploitation of hydrocarbon reserves as a comparable event?

That's fascinating. I'd never heard of armadillo *quadruplets* before. You guesstimate 10% from just early transcription noise. How could this be done rigorously? Something along the lines of GCTA but on transcriptome-space?

I'd expect it to be part of the scavenger suite of traits because there's so much lipofuscin and similar crosslinked stuff in cells: they make up a nontrivial % in old organisms. I guess it depends how specialized you consider 'decomposer' as a niche.

Or if you meant the SENS part, they call it 'LysoSENS': eg

Never heard of that. How does that work? Do you lift up the material or is it circular somehow?

Tool didn't italicize it and I'm not a Unicode ninja so I don't know what I can and can't do with combining things.

I also enjoy the inverse of mistaken zygosity: Nancy Segal's look-alikes, people who look as similar as identical twins but aren't related at all (and, of course, are no more similar than they ought to be).

๐Ÿ˜ฎ I thought to myself, 'by SWA, surely he doesn't mean it literally, just averaging together 2 random models, come on, that would be crazy! He must be doing something like training for a few iterations and SWAing those instead.'

I'm a little confused. What does SWA mean when you are 'combining' multiple models? I've only ever seen it referring to iterates of the same model.

Yes, their exotic hardware's power-efficient, but I suppose it would also be nice to outperform logistic regression on MNIST.

There's one regular letter in there, 'รข'. There can't be many English sentences which use 'รข' ever so that might trigger a French language detector, but then (without special-casing) it'll bomb out on the special italics Unicode, failing to map them back to their regular letters.

That seems unlikely. AFAIK there's nothing particularly special about digesting lipofuscins and other aging by-products, and it's inevitable if you have enough life for it to potentially be a problem. Heck, bacteria will digest oil or plastics for you or live in nuclear reactors!

You can interpret it that way, if you happen to prefer drinking bitter swill like black tea, instead of good teas. I won't judge you for entirely lacking any taste and not drinking green or oolong teasโ€”for my tweets are catholic and admit of many readings.

Ancient, yes, but there's always room for an insightful twist to add zing to it, like lemon in tea.

There's definitely a lot more that could be said about this than retreading basic thermodynamics loopholes. For example, lipofuscin and the SENS program: crud builds up in all cells as they age; why are we not buried under it after billions of years? Specialist bacteria!
