It would be nicer if they licensed out the W1, and to some extent, it's unclear why they won't—AirPods and Beats headphones will still sell on their own merits. But that's different from saying that it was unreasonable of them to remove the headphone jack when they did.

It’s easy to explain why they won’t license W1. The magic is in the W1, not the paired device. If they licensed W1, they would no longer be a platform advantage for iOS.

The W1 benefit isn’t strictly limited to iOS. There are positive reviews for AirPods on Android devices, so that dual-radio setup shines through no matter what your platform. On the other hand, you need to have a certain revision of iOS for easy pairing, so the device matters too
