Senior EU source says a number of phone calls have taken place between Theresa May and Leo Varadkar this evening. A second call took place between Mrs May and around 19hr Brussels time.

Before we go bonkers this seems to be situation - 1. a potential solution been worked up + looked at favourably in London, Brussels + Dublin 2. EU + Dublin sound positive about it 3. UK govt believes there is progress but it isn't over 4. DUP hasn't yet signed off

Summary of what our sources are saying: no deal yet, May not flying to Brussels tonight, Tusk statement likely to be attempt to hurry things along. But progress being made and positive noises from all sides about deal being closer.

I'm hearing that May phone call to Foster might not happen today as DUP feel there is so much work to be done on wording of deal that there's no point in phoning at this stage.

Telegraph understands that DUP had not been told Theresa May was going to phone Arlene Foster until it was announced to press by Downing Street. DUP wasn't expecting a phone call and there hasn't been one yet. What is going on???

So the current situation is: Theresa May can't tell Juncker/Tusk/Barnier whether she will be in Brussels tomorrow because she is waiting for Arlene Foster's permission to go.
