The Industrial Revolution was a stunningly big deal for humanity, massively more important than anything else that ever happened. It is also hard to reverse (the article estimates a catastrophe would have to drop world population by 15% to backslide much).

“It’s always surprised me that most [user interfaces] don’t really have any equivalent to adverbs: discrete ways of doing things, such as quietly or aggressively, that can be applied to any verb in order to modify its effects.”

Well, that makes it official. Starting tomorrow, the US government can send any asylum seeker who enters without a visa to Guatemala (except Guatemalans or unaccompanied kids), and will require people to prove it's "more likely than not" they'll be persecuted there to avoid it.

Climate math is really hard. Great animation here captures it. There's almost no pathway to 2 degrees (certainly not 1.5) that does not include large negative emissions at this point.

On the bright side, software has a magical chemistry. Time is the only capital a SWE needs to do research. Whatever they discover can be replicated at zero marginal cost.

ML is the perfect exception! Distance between research and $$$ is short. Also has perfect combo of short term wins fueling $ investment (optimization), and long-term metanarrative fueling belief (“AI will be as the coming of a god!”)

This looks like individuals replacing institutions, but that's an illusion caused by our being immersed in this temporary fluid moment between when networks deterritorialize institutions, and when new networked institutional forms are reterritorialized.
