Someone recently suggested to me that open source may have had a bigger impact on cloud than cloud on open source. Let’s assume that’s true. What are the ways that open source has influenced cloud?

the whole intellectual foundation of open interfaces and combinatorial single-purpose tools is pretty well ingrained in cloud and absent from the closed-source ecosystem.

OK, you need to keep running with this. I easily grok the “the economics of OSS make the cloud possible.” But you’re onto something here that goes even further. Can you elaborate?

closed source's "value" prop is integration. ethos of open source is composable pieces (think pipes). imo, this creates momentum in open source that's absent from ground-up closed ecosystems.

Open source UNIX was kind of developing in the 80s with Software Tools giving you a UNIX userland on proprietary hardware, but real free UNIX didn’t really take off until the 90s... the small tool model took off with proprietary UNIX in the early 70s.

What we called it back then was open systems, which grew from UNIX and DARPA. Open source and open systems work together.
