The most stressed out I've ever been about Christmas was when I was 16 and I got my first ever job, working at M&S in Dundrum. As soon as I started I kept hearing these myths about the Christmas Eve Waste Sale, where all the food that wasn't sold on the 24th was marked down 90%.

No-one in the history of football deployed the backheel to better effect than Diego Maradona. An integral part of his game, no showboating involved. Outrageously good.

To be offended by Maradona is to miss the point. Marvel at his skill instead, his audacity, his technique, his vision, his virtuosity, his power, his maverick, unpredictable nature and all that came with it, and simply celebrate the joy and unpredictability football can bring

In 1984 Diego Maradona asked Napoli & Fifa to arrange a friendly in order to help an ill child. Both refused. Maradona then organised a game on the field opposite the child's house. 4,000 people attended the game.

A little anecdote that sums up Maradona's sheer status. Before the 1990 World Cup opener, some of the Cameroonian players started crying when they saw him in the tunnel, because they just couldn't believe they were on the same pitch as him.

"Pele scored more goals. Messi has won more trophies. But if you’ve seen Diego Maradona with a football at his feet, you’ll understand." When FFT compiled the 1️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ greatest footballers ever to play the game, Diego Maradona came top. You understand.

The 2010 Tory line that "we've maxed out our credit card" has to go down as one of the most successful bits of political framing in history. Journalists still repeating it 10yrs on, even as the IMF, the City & entire economics profession agree it bears no relationship to reality.

The idea that our current problems are baffling, unsolvable puzzles that result from "algorithms" rather than human design decisions is a persistent lie. For every unintentional ripple effect there are a dozen "Well, that would hurt the bottom line" choices.

Breaking: US President-Elect tells about the importance of maintaining an open border on the island of Ireland, post-Brexit. He tells me: “The idea of having the border between north & south once again being closed, it’s just not right”

You want to know what the real bad news is here? It's not that there are queues for miles just because the French customs authorities are "trialling post-Brexit boarding systems". It's that we aren't. /1

Surprising for someone who's always revving on about it, but you're forgetting WW2 when your heroes tried to destroy Britain.
