Ground-to-cloud lightning fills the sky over Burleigh Heads, Australia, in an awesome display of the power of nature.

Evidence of massive publication bias in psychology: The number of positive results in Registered Reports (i.e., papers accepted for publication before the results are known) is vastly lower than that in regular reports: 44% vs. 96% for the first hypothesis in each paper. twitter.com/annemscheel/st…

What should really make you worry is not per se that the newer models have a higher climate sensitivity, but that this climate sensitivity is higher than what was previously considered plausible. Tells you that you can't rely on the uncertainty estimates.

Amen. No other methodology has been so effective at forecasting the future cost of clean energy. It's amazing how official energy forecasters keep missing this. twitter.com/birsic/status/…

But as more knowledgeable people have observed it's probably cleaner to factor out the existential and the constraint:
data Exists f = forall a. Exists (f a)
data Given c a = c a => Given a
type Some c = Exists (Given c)
(I think this is the same thing as @mstk's suggestion?)

Indeed I have: hackage.haskell.org/package/exists
These days you could even use QuantifiedConstraints to make the instances/defaults properly general...

There are a bunch of things where shared mutable state is 'pure'/well-behaved as long as it's monotonic: IVars, LVars, unification, CRDTs, gradually typed mutable references, ... it's kinda fascinating and I'd like to understand the underlying logic better one day.

(I just looked up the Petri nets thing, but I would guess that it's similarly an instance of losing "soundness", which is what's usually referred to as Turing-completeness.)

W.r.t. NOT, the deeper issue is that it's non-monotonic. In e.g. Datalog, if new elements are added to a relation, that can only cause other relations to grow in turn, not shrink... except if you use negation. See also Russell's paradox.

Speaking of cognates, I recently tried to research where "void" originated and failed. :/ (FPers like to get annoyed at C-descendants for their `void` being a unit type rather than a bottom type which is "wrong", but it's unclear which came first and why they ended up different.)
