What's a dirty secret that everybody in your industry knows about but anyone outside of your line of work would be scandalized to hear?

A very open secret in the world of social policy is at the edge of progress, where we have to invent new policy, we also have to say things like "ABOLISH ICE" and they expect us to come up with a functional alternative, as if sunsetting a failed policy is not self-explanatory.

A good number of the most needed proposals in the world of public policy aren't proposals at all, but rather calls for the abolition of bad policies. Progress isn't linear. The architects of tomorrow are the demolition workers of today. But we don't make it safe for dissent.

Oh, right, so the scandalous thing is, everything in social policy is made up. We haven't had a functional census in over a decade. There's no national survey that could tell you how many people are living in poverty anymore. We live under an intentional shroud of ignorance.

The government doesn't want to invest in knowing how many people in America are suffering. Our government invests practically nothing in developing self-knowledge. No academic can tell you what's really happening because the data doesn't exist.

The dirty secret at so many policy schools is the unspoken truth that America doesn't actually value iterative policy development since the voting polity doesn't actually seem to care what happens to the poor so long as their team wins.

Most candidates don't hire policy people because they're smart. They hire policy people who can crib bullshit from the Democratic Party's Downticket policy manual and not take up too much of the candidate's time with weird questions like what does it mean to legislate well?
