I guess the thinking was the people might act differently if they knew they had the vaccine (via an immune response) which could introduce bias into the study and make the results less robust. I too am hopeful about the vaccines and am hoping the reviewers do a good job!

It’s on the Oxford vaccine group information page about their trial. That’s how I know.

I’m not arguing whether it made sense or not, my initial post was just to explain why they did it.

Also, the people who wrote about his death have nothing to do with informed consent - the participants are the ones who need the information and they got it, as all the paperwork will have had to pass ethics before use. No ethics committee would allow info like that to be missed.

Yes I do personally know a couple of participants in the Oxford trial. The consent form is extensive and covers what the options are. The guy from Brazil who sadly died was widely reported to have died from covid19, why is the type of placebo relevant?

You have to staff the Nightingale hospitals as well. And when you say you’d rather see the nightingales open than people locked down are you saying we should just do what we want and the cost is loads more sick people but it’s ok cause they can die in the nightingales?

How does it violate informed consent? Presumably they told participants that the placebo was the men vaccine (it was common knowledge tbh, they didn’t hide it). If I’d been in that trial it would be on the understanding that if either get the covid vac or the men one 🤷‍♀️

Did Pfizer and Moderna regularly test their participants for covid throughout the trial? I think the Ox/AZ trials in the UK did. Is this a possible partial reason for the reduced efficacy (because the others missed non symptomatic infections)?

I think they did that so that it aided blinding - participants wouldn’t ‘know’ (or have a very good idea) whether they’d had the placebo or vaccine by the immune reaction, or lack thereof, after getting the jab.

Yes it’s fabulous. And one of the judges cries if he particularly likes a make.

I hope TFL take it seriously, they should do. It’s not acceptable. Again I’m so sorry you (rightly) felt unprotected.

Do you need a dedicated ultrasound machine or could a bladder scanner be used? I feel a bit stupid asking this as I’m just not sure if it’s a really crazy question or a very practical one!
