Currently have a guest staying who's a keen swimmer. Last night: Him: "Let's go to the lido at 6:30am tomorrow to swim!" Me: "Sure!" (inwardly thinking OMG 6:30am but not letting on because I've already banged on about how great early morning swims are) Reader, it was glorious.

A little bit delighted to see Gin Made Me Do It on this list of recommendations (may have squealed and danced a little). A bookshop would never recommend you wrong, so you should all nip in to Carnforth and buy a copy of everything on this list.

Oh my, thank you! This makes me feel like an actual writer (as opposed to just a lucky drinker).

Isabel Allende fled Chile for Venezuela after her family received death threats. Khaled Hosseini sought asylum in US during the Soviet–Afghan War. Viet Thanh Nguyen came to the US as a refugee at the age of 4. Refugees bring skills and possibilities and change.

Nazi Germany doesn't stand out because of the sheer number it killed - you can make solid arguments in favour of the Soviet state there. It stands out because there was no revolution, no sudden defining moment. Slowly, but surely, men found themselves monsters. FIN.

Will you be leaving little saucers of advocaat out for the hedgehogs tonight?

Advocaat is an underrated drink. Glad the hedgehogs are appreciating it.

Oh no! On the plus side, you can burn it now and enjoy the atmospheric light without worrying about wasting the scent.

Perhaps you ought to put her in it for one glorious day in the garden or park, making sure that a paddling pool, mud and running on grass all feature to ensure it really really gets used?

I think that we can all agree the most upsetting image here is a bathtub full of mashed potatoes.

No, the victims are often a bit vague but it's not just one victim...
