I used to have students sign an undertaking that they would not go on the internet/e-mail/text/message in class. It was explicitly not enforceable and had no consequences for breach except their own guilt at breaking their word. Students told me they used the web materially less

It’s that time of year when I begin obsessing about a laptop ban for my first year class. We all know args for & against — would love to tally up practices of inspired profs like plus plus

If it's not already part of academic orientation at your school, teach your students how to take good notes. If you make it explicit what they should be listening for, how they should be organizing info, & how to use class notes for studying, the laptop problem solves itself.

...I talk about the articles in the first class, and then leave it to the students to determine what’s best for their learning. I’m also fully honest about my uncertainty about the best approach, and that if tech becomes a problem in the class, we’ll revisit.

So I post a repository of articles on the class website (small, hoping they’ll read it!) on the learning outcomes of taking notes by hand, the most productive kinds of notes, different learning styles, and the negative impacts of tech multitasking on self & colleagues in class...

My possibly inadequate method is to do fairly comprehensive slides, ensuring important content is on there, and make those available. Plus rely on fact that accommodations do sometimes have to be sought (though outing not ideal). Have never had a student raise it but I'm junior.

One possible related new idea this year: to say that students who ask questions outside of class, whether in person or on email, are obliged to post exchange on course page. So that all can benefit.

Oooh, love these convos. My goal is to teach to the diverse learning styles in the room; to use pedagogies that are dynamic such that a laptop is not needed, but to not exclude technology. And always to pay attention to accessibility.

I am so immensely proud to say that this story was written by a Muslim woman, featured Muslim women and photographed by a Muslim woman and the product is just all-around stunning.
