When compressed, Reddit produces about 8-9gb of text per month. In the case of Aether we store 6 months, so even if we had 250M+ users like them, it would still come to something around 30-40Gb total storage. It’s entirely within the realm of possibility to just store everything.

I’ll be giving a talk at the Internet Archive (@internetarchive) about @getaether this Jan 21 - latest numbers, new features, updates on sustainability efforts and what’s coming next. Other great folks in there too, should be a fun evening. twitter.com/internetarchiv…

I wrote a post about decentralized social networks, comparing federated and peer-to-peer protocols through Mastodon, Matrix, ssb, and Aether.

30% churn is a very normal rate for most networks, so it makes DHTs not super stable for P2P uses where most users are intermittent, vs always available torrent seed boxes which make the BitTorrent DHT work .

The issue with DHTs is that they scale very poorly when it comes to churn and at 30% churn most DHTs just fall apart. That seems to be a fundamental limitation that no one worked around. Hence my (@nehbit’s) decision to avoid it for the time being.

You probably need both Aether’s approach *and* DHT - the reason we can avoid DHT is that we restrict the content to text only (thus very highly compressible) so we can have a full copy of timeboxed full network content payload in every device.

Sorta. 🙂 It works *with* Slack. You ‘bump’ the conversations you want to preserve into Aether via the Slack integration.

That shouldn’t matter - people use Aether over Tor even. But your VPN app might be setting your firewall to be aggressive, and that might be the culprit.

Check your firewall, it’s possible that Windows firewall just didn’t give it outbound access.

In Aether, we use moderators for this as ‘trusted decision makers’ on what to block. Moderators can be controlled by individual users / be elected / impeached. getaether.net/docs/faq/votin…
(To be fair, this part of Aether is still being built, so we’re about the same as SSB I think.)

What was the issue, do you remember? We do have a few Linux users, Ubuntu should definitely work.
