Most people think that the future of VR is in games and entertainment, but it is also in office work; in particular, VR is going to replace screens and laptops.

✔️ Simula uses eye-focus to determine what the "active window" is (for keyboard & cursor focus).
We're almost done implementing Simula's nix expression so that you can run it on your PC (I know you use nix).

One can find dimensions along which transformative Tools for Thought (TfT) are *significantly* better. For example, Mathematica's (i) documentation has 10x the reach, (ii) its code is 2x-10x more concise, and (iii) its conceptual reach is 2x-10x broader than the "competition".

An "ounce of prevention" can also prevent several million pounds of cure from being developed in the first place (compounded over time). Type 1 errors are overrated.

What are some of the most innovative (not mere copy-cat) open-source software projects you can think of in the past 10 years?

This requires immense effort to maintain and lots of centralized decision-making, both things that open-sourced software isn't good at.

most people think that a good programming language should be kept *small*, but Wolfram keeps his language *large*, offshoring as much computational knowledge as possible directly into the core language.

One of the reasons why Mathematica is so great is Stephen Wolfram's contrarian architectural philosophy:

On the flipside: what are some of the most innovative open source software products right now?

I think the Wolfram Programming Language is the best kept secret in software (for example: it's more concise than any LISP). It should be more popular than Python, but for a variety of marketing and licensing reasons, is not. pic.twitter.com/dneO7rGtXV

Wolfram Research is rumored to be worth around $2B (with ~800 employees), so from an investment perspective has done OK (~40% CAGR over 30 years if it was funded like a traditional software startup). Millions of people use Wolfram tech without realizing it through Siri/Alexa.

It took me years to discover how great Mathematica was because (i) people have such irrational disdain for Stephen Wolfram; (ii) it's closed-source; (iii) it's extremely expensive (and should be thought of as something like a Bloomberg Terminal for quick scripting).

The most I've ever paid for pure software in the past 10 years has been for access to Wolfram Mathematica, which (i) is built on creativity; (ii) is possibly the single most innovative pure software product on the market right now.
