Programming as Theory Building, by Peter Naur (I don't agree with all of it, but it does match a lot of my experience on software teams... "more documentation" can't replace complex tacit knowledge in people's heads)

Feels like bounding the domain is key for a grammar to work well... Data vis hits sweet spot: rich enough to get power from grammar, small enough to span with a little language. "All knowledge management software" feels bigger but tractable...

Yeah! I love Notion for related reasons by the way :) Curious to see how you grow the grammar

The prefab charts in Excel remind me so much of most software today. There are lots of knobs to tweak, but at the end of the day you're dealing with a prefab product, and that limits your thinking. How can we compose more of our software in a grammatical way?

For example, take that heatmap and make two little tweaks: * paint rects -> paint circles * encode count as color -> encode as size and you get this new design. I have no idea if this thing has an official name or how I'd make it in Excel

It's a high level grammar and the primitives are matched to the domain, so it's still super easy to produce the standard graphs... But because you built it up yourself, there's zero barrier to getting creative beyond that!

Started learning Vega-Lite... fascinating how my design process is changed by using a well-designed "grammar of graphics" with powerful primitives and composition, instead of customizing Excel's prefab charts »

Thanks for the pointer! I'm a fan of both of their work but had not seen this yet, excited to read

Yeah, B級グルメ / “B-level gourmet” is a big thing there.. definitely related to street food culture in other countries but seems unique somehow in its focus on quality

Lots of cities have good food at $15+, but IMO Tokyo has by far the consistently best quality at < 1000yen price point Matsuya and the other beef bowl places are even < 500yen and still good...

Who wants to bet the crappy vendor they overpaid for this shiny new election app told them to say “user error”?

Update: this exists! So exciting to see proof that using a database as the filesystem actually helps different apps work together

Fascinating! I've dreamed of a system like this, had no idea it actually existed. Thanks for sharing
